The Society of Orthopaedic Medicine is proud to offer Better
Courses for Better Outcomes. The exciting MSc in Orthopaedic
Medicine programme has been developed as a collaborative venture
between Middlesex University and the SOM, and is the first of its
kind in Europe. Recognising the importance of continuing professional
development (CPD), we provide the opportunity for experienced physiotherapists
and medical practitioners to develop clinical, research and other
relevant skills to extend their qualifications in orthopaedic medicine.
You will explore injection therapy, advanced practice, project development
and research methods.

Programme content
Orthopaedic medicine is embedded as the underpinning of musculoskeletal
medicine and therapy. The integration of the academic programme
with clinical experience will drive both professional development
and clinical enhancement in this field.
The programme will enable medical practitioners and physiotherapists
to develop mastery in the application and integration of orthopaedic
medicine into their clinical practice and to enhance the level of
patient care, particularly in the field of musculoskeletal medicine
and therapy.
The programme provides the opportunity for the experienced physiotherapist
or medical practitioner to develop clinical, research and other
relevant skills in relation to orthopaedic medicine.

*Students are normally required to choose 2 out of the 3 option
modules available but accreditation of prior learning (APL) may
exempt you from up to one third of the MSc Orthopaedic Medicine
programme.
The normal duration of the part-time programme is one year or eighteen
months depending on the length of time planned to complete the dissertation.
Assessment
While each module has its own assessment methods, there is a strong
focus on coursework and assessment of skills development.
Entry requirements
Relevant professional medical or physiotherapy qualification. All
candidates must have successfully completed all components of the
Society of Orthopaedic Medicine Diploma course or an accredited
equivalent course in orthopaedic medicine. A reflective essay and
personal development plan will often be required in addition to
an accredited course not completed through the Society of Orthopaedic
Medicine.
Fees
The fee for the MSc programme is £3,625, plus an additional
£310 per option module undertaken. We keep our fees to an
absolute minimum to cover costs and do not make a profit from the
MSc programme. The £310 fee per option module represents a
subsidy from the SOM of more than 50% towards MSc students’
participation.
Enrolment
The MSc programme commences in September with enrolment at the
Archway Campus of Middlesex University which is immediately followed
by the first unit of SOM 1, Methods of Critical Enquiry in the Study
of Healthcare Services.
