Page Heading: About the Journal

International Musculoskeletal Medicine looks at the widest spectrum of scientific data on the subject of musculoskeletal pain:

  • research from worldwide sources

  • writers from all disciplines

  • treatments including manual and injection therapies

Having its roots 21 years ago in the orthopaedic medicine associations of the UK, which provided the catalyst of doctors and physiotherapists working together, production of the Journal has encouraged a wider search for scientific work; research papers have been coming additionally from the osteopathic and chiropractic disciplines, as well as from the basic sciences.

Much research in both spinal and peripheral pain problems has pointed to the efficacy of combination therapy (for example of using injection in association with manual techniques). The Journal therefore aims to present the full spectrum of approaches which are effective for the sufferer from musculoskeletal pain, rather than basing itself on one therapeutic discipline. Papers are selected on the basis of scientific merit primarily, with important secondary considerations of practical usefulness for the reader; other papers present hypotheses to get our reader thinking hard, and occasional others give us stimulating ‘medico-political’ comments.

The Journal has enjoyed support from round the world, and at an early stage developed its close association with the American Association of Orthopaedic Medicine. More recently the Dutch Federation for Manual Medicine has had representatives on the Editorial Board. The Editorial Board reflects the international and multidisciplinary theme of the Journal. Authorship is currently mainly ‘North Atlantic’, but we have had valuable contributions from Australasia, and elsewhere.
